1.Effect of antioxidants on plasma low level chemiluminescence of rats exposed with cigarette smoke

Antioxidant at given amounts were added into blood plasma (1 ml) which was obtained from rats exposed with cigarette smoke for 3min. Control means plasma with no addition of exogenous antioxidants. Chemiluminescence intensities were given as relative values to the control plasma (100%). SOD, superoxide dismutase ; EGCg, epigallocatechin gallate. Data are means ± SE of three determinations. a,b,c,d Significantly different to each other (p<0.05).

2.Effect of GSH on influenza viral titer at low MOI in cultured MDCK cells.

MDCK cells were infected with influenza A/WSN strain at 0.05-0.1 pfu/cell for 2h. After removal of viral inoculation and washing with PBS, cells were maintained in DMEM medium supplemented with 2% serum for 48h, with the addition of GSH at the indicated concentrations. Viral production in the medium was determined by HA assay. * Significant at p<.05, n=6; one-way ANOVA with liner trend.

3.Dose dependence of orally administered GSH compared against AAP-induced serum L-alanine:2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase (ALT) and L-aspartate:2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase activities (AST).

Enzyme activities were determined 27h after administration of GSH (0, 0.33, 0.65 and 1.63 mmol/kg). Data are expressed as means ± SE of there to six rats per time point and group. Data not sharing common subscript letters are significantly different at p<0.025.

4.Epidermal glutathione levels after UVB irradiation

Time after UVB Total glutathione % depletion
unirradiated 0.75 ± 0.16
0 min 0.81 ± 0.04
5 min 0.65 ± 0.13 13
10 min 0.46 ± 0.08* 39
30 min 0.72 ± 0.15 4

*Significantly lower than unirradiated controls, P < 0.05.
Epidermis was recovered after irradiation with 90mJ cm-2 UVB. Results are the means ± standard deviation for groups of five mice.
